Michael Williams on the Issues
I am delighted that you have come to visit my issues page. Few things ignite my passions more than innovative public policy. If you agree with my vision for Texas and the United States, I hope you will consider joining my campaign. Thank you.
Michael Williams on Big Government
We are made in the image of God and endowed with rights inherited from Him. Government’s primary responsibility is to advance the cause of freedom and promote, protect and secure the inalienable rights that were endowed to us by God. As such, the proper role of government is both limited and subordinate to man. In its proper role, the federal government would refrain from usurping the proper functions that should be performed by state and local governments—who are closer to the people. The federal government would assist individuals and institutions more immediate to the people only when the latter cannot fulfill their proper functions.
Michael Williams on Healthcare Reform
We want Americans to have access to the best healthcare available at the lowest possible cost while preserving patient choices and increasing individual ownership of healthcare decisions. We should increase the amount of pretax dollars that a family can contribute to Health Savings Accounts and allow them to purchase health insurance, of any type and from any source, tax-free. Patients should not be insulated from the cost of treatment. And I strongly oppose a public option that will run private insurance out of the marketplace, putting bureaucrats in charge of healthcare decisions for millions of Americans.
Michael on Energy Security
On energy, our motto should be “all of the above.” We should drill for more American oil and natural gas here in America. We should accelerate the commercialization of clean coal technologies with carbon capture and storage, build more nuclear plants to reduce carbon emissions, and expand the utilization of alternative and renewable energy sources. Energy efficiency and conservation advances our energy security because every kilowatt we do not consume is a kilowatt we do not have to generate.
Michael Williams on Controlling Spending
Our children will inherit a legacy of debt, with more debt accumulated under President Obama than the previous 43 presidents combined. We need to bring greater transparency to spending to curtail waste, reform the flawed earmark process, and control the growth of government. Wasteful government spending puts a needless burden on the next generation of Americans and will require too much raising of our taxes.
Michael Williams on Cutting Taxes
The best tax system helps make poor people rich, not rich people poor. An efficient tax system has a broad tax base and a low tax rate. America has the second highest corporate tax burden in the developed world. We need to unleash the entrepreneurial spirit by cutting taxes and reforming the tax code with a flat tax. The president’s carbon cap and trade scheme amounts to huge tax on Texas families, and will devastate our energy sector. His healthcare plan cannot be financed without soaking taxpayers as well. The president is also discouraging charitable giving through elimination of the charitable tax deduction. The key to generating jobs and growth is cutting taxes instead of raising them. It is a fundamental issue of fairness, and it is critical to bringing America out of recession.
Michael Williams on Border Security/Immigration
In an age of terrorism we cannot afford to have inadequately controlled borders with millions of people crossing illegally at will. Eight years after 9/11, the government bureaucracy is so broken we don’t even know who is in our country. This is a major issue of national security. We have an absolute obligation to control our borders and that obligation is a question of national security. This is not a question of closing the borders, but controlling them. The safety of the American people depends on it.
Border control is a matter of national security. Amnesty is an affront to the rule of law. To reduce illegal immigration, we must secure the border first with both physical and virtual fences as well as more patrols; aggressively enforce sanctions against employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants; immediately deport immigrant felons; require applicants for a temporary work visa to return home and maintain a tamper-proof identification card.
The United States is a special nation because we are founded on a revolutionary idea: That we are all created equal and endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We are a welcoming people who understand that people come to America for a higher standard of living, to escape social unrest and political or religious oppression. For generations, immigrants have provided America with a great vitality and robustness. Coming to America must mean more than coming for a job. Coming to America is about coming to be an American. And it must be done in accord with the rule of law.
Michael Williams on the Auto Bailout
The ‘too big to fail’ doctrine goes against the core principals of a free market economy. Better-managed competitors are treated unfairly, and in this particular case creditors have been treated unfairly to advance a political agenda. Currently, Washington owns some 70 percent of the new GM, while the United Auto Workers union will own almost 20 percent. It is time to sell GM and Chrysler back to the shareholders.
